Rush Hour

In contemporary urban society there are few real levellers; indeed the social disparities seem to get more defined. However there are one or two aspects to our daily rituals that nearly all us have to experience; one of these is the rush hour.

In London, the rush hour seems to last for most of the day. We seem to be constantly in queues, or waiting for non existent trains that get cancelled at the last minute. There is this constant apologising which sounds more and more ludicrous as time passes, and what feels like an institutional apathy that makes us all culpable.

I wanted to record the experiences using this crumbling infrastructure- waiting for the non existent trains, the bolshy ticket checkers, the leaves on the line, the idiot with his/her personal stereo that isn't so personal, the nutter that hasn't washed for months and sits next to us, the loudmouth on his/her (but usually his) mobile phone, the buses that stop short of their destination and tell everyone to get off, the points failures, the apologies, the pushing, the queue barging, the graffitti, the filth, the cars parked in the bus lane when we're on the bus, the buses in the bus lane when we're in the car, the roadworks, the cancellations.

This work has been recorded on 35mm transparency.
